Abstract

Objectives: This study was conducted to determine the effect of tutorial videos on the self-efficacy of tracheostomy patients. Background: Patients with a tracheostomy need long term care at home and improving their self-efficacy can be helpful in better care. Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted on 80 patients with a tracheotomy randomized into two groups. At the time of discharge and after routine trainings, the intervention group was given a CD containing the routine training for patient care to be watched at home. After two months, the participants completed the self-efficacy questionnaires again. Results: Statistical analysis showed that after two months the comparison of the mean of the two groups intervention group (from 32.87 ± 4.49 to 35.46 ±3.24) and control group (from 35.60 ± 6.95 to 35.30 ±5. 95) was significantly different (p=0.0001). Conclusions: The use of tutorial videos is an effective way for improving self-efficacy of patients with tracheostomy. Thus, it is recommended that this instructional method be utilized in training programs for medical personnel to be used for this group of patients. Practice Implications: The healthcare team, especially nurses, can use this educational method to improve the self-efficacy of patients with tracheostomy at the time of discharge as a complementary method.
